Let's Share a Song: Song Structures for Duos

★Guest Instructor★

One Day Workshop

In this class taught by Alex Tracy and Curry Whitmire (Baby Wants Candy, Undressed: The Improvised Musical, Musical Megawatt, etc.) we'll explore what it takes to navigate creating improvised songs as a pair. Together, we’ll experiment with:

  • Protag Song with Secondary Bridge – one protagonist leads the majority of the song while the secondary supports, lifts, or reframes the story within the bridge.
  • Tagline Duets – two protagonists trade off the first two verses with either a front or back line tag. Shared bridge and layered third verse.
  • Joint Verse-Chorus – two protagonists (or protagonist/antagonist) trade off verses with a chorus that accommodates both character’s defining want.
  • Shared or layered bridge.

We’ll also tackle how we know whose turn it is to sing, reviewing tools for listening/signaling that make sharing songs feel simple and collaborative.
