Adventure Club Season Two!

Elective

Adventure Club is the Recreational Improv Program offered by Buffalo Improv House. Experienced improv students and local performers sign up to be on a limited-run long form improv team that runs for 5 rehearsals and 4 shows. Adventure Club is an extension of our training program and is priced similarly to an 8-week class. It is first come, first served - not audition-based or juried. Teams are capped at 9 participants, so the first nine performers to sign up for a team are that team!

This season we have two teams, with rehearsal schedules as follows:

Team Caitlin (Sunday Morning Rehearsals)
Directed by Caitlin Steitzer

Rehearsals:

Sunday August 11
Sunday August 25
Thursday September 5 (Special Thursday rehearsal)
Sunday September 15
Sunday September 19

Team Diego (Tuesday Evening Rehearsals)
Directed by Diego Martinez

Rehearsals:

Tuesday August 13
Tuesday August 27
Tuesday September 3
Tuesday September 17
Tuesday October 1

Performances: These two teams will perform together for four performances:

Saturday August 17 in the evening
Saturday September 7 @ 4:30pm
Saturday September 21 in the evening
Saturday October 5 in the evening

The exact show times will be determined within a few weeks.

Student discounts and barter-arrangement discounts may be available -- reach out to us at email@buffaloimprovhouse.com for more information!

Prerequisites: At bare minimum, participants in Adventure Club should have completed our Level One improv class, or can demonstrate equivalent experience. Our Level 2 class is highly recommended, as it is the only local class we know of that teaches the fundamentals of long form improv in the way we do, but we don't want to discourage you from applying if this seems like a fun thing for you! Feel free to reach out to us with any questions about any of this! email@buffaloimprovhouse.com

Instructor Bio

CAITLIN STEITZER has been performing, studying, and teaching improv for over 25 years if you can believe it. Before moving to Buffalo she could be seen performing regularly at the Magnet Theater in NYC, around the country at festivals with her indie team Honey, and hosting comedy variety shows at ABC NoRio and around Brooklyn. Weirdly enough, she is also a licensed clinical social worker, and has used improv throughout her career to build community and foster confidence in people from all walks of life. Her research on the connections between social group work and improv theater was published in the Journal for Social Group Work and presented at the 2010 International Association for Social Work with Groups Annual Symposium. When she was still in graduate school, Caitlin designed and implemented the Diversity Program at the Upright Citizens' Brigade Theater in NYC, one of the first of its kind in the country. As a social worker, she spent over 8 years at the nationally renowned Center for Family Life (CFL) in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and taught improv to maybe a gajillion people throughout all five boroughs. When not nerding out about improv theater she can be found hanging out with her dog and her husband, riding her bike, or creating dance music playlists.

DIEGO MARTINEZ has been performing and coaching improv and sketch comedy since 2010. He has studied across various theaters in Atlanta, Georgia and New York City and has performed all over the United States, Canada, and the internet. Diego has also tried out for every NBA team, but has been told he is too good to play in the league

Frequently Asked Question

Q: I’ve done improv before and would like to take an eight-week class. Which class should I start with?

A: Our Level One class is our introductory class, and is the class most people should probably start with, even those with improv experience. It is well-paced and full of great information and activities. In Level One we cover Yes/And, building a grounded foundation for our scenes, creating characters and committing to them, initiating from a suggestion and an opening, basic scene mechanics, and editing. Our Level One class is specifically designed to be worthwhile and fun for everyone, including people with improv comedy experience.

This being said, if you’ve taken long form improv classes from a place that teaches it similarly to the way that we teach it (there are a lot of places that qualify) or if you perform improv comedy regularly, it should be fine if you would like to start with either our Level Two or Musical Improv Comedy Level One class, or if you want to participate in our Adventure Club program. If you’d like to chat about whether it might be ok for you to jump right to an upper-level class, send us an email at email@buffaloimprovhouse.com

COVID Policy: We follow local, state, and federal guidance and requirements in regards to COVID safety policies. In addition, this class takes place at a building that may choose to enact its own COVID safety policies, and we are in frequent communication with other performing arts organizations regarding their COVID policies. Our classes are currently mask-optional, with proof of vaccination not required. However, this may change as CDC, State and local regulations and guidance changes, or as new best practices develop in our industry. We take COVID seriously and ask that you do not take our classes if you are unwilling to follow COVID safety measures if the COVID situation returns us to a place where face coverings or proof of vaccination become required or recommended again.
